Shocking Accident in Mexborough High Street

After taking her two young children, Jackie (6) and Stanley (4) two Garden Street School, Mexborough, on Wednesday morning, 26 years old Mrs Esther Coates, wife of Stanley Coates, miner 14 York St, Mexborough, returned home and then decided to do some shopping in Mexborough on a cycle. While in high Street she was involved in an accident in which a five ton lorry proceeding in the Swinton direction was also concerned. She received terrible head injuries and died instantly.

The accident occurred at a time when I Street was thronged with shoppers, among whom considerable distress was causing the tragic mishap.

Mrs Ghose was the only daughter of Mr and Mrs John Oxley, 40, York Street, Mexborough, who are old Mexborough residents. Her father is employed by the General Election Company Ltd, Swinton is a tester inspector, and her husband former Swinton is employed at Manvers Main Colliery. He was at home when the accident occurred. They had been married nine years.

Mrs Coates had lived in Mexborough all her life.

An inquest will be held by the Doncaster District Coroner (Mr W ECarlile) at Montagu Hospital this (Friday) morning, and the funeral will take place at Mexborough Cemetery tomorrow (Saturday) at 4 p.m.
