When Mexborough “pipped” Club Now in the Football League.

The publication of a photograph of Mexborough’s Midland league championship team of six years ago has prompted readers to provide pictures of the team and committee in the club’s 1925-26 championship season.

We reproduce herewith pictures kindly lent to us by Mr W. P. Marsdin who was the club chairman at the memorable time. He tells us that of the players in the photograph Laurie Burkinshaw was previously with Sheffield Wednesday; Harold Cope was later transferred to Blackburn Rovers; and Frank Parkinson, of Dearne Valley old boys, was not a regular member of the side.

But on that particular day was deputising for full-back Mark purcell, Teddy Ashton was later transferred to Barnsley and Cyril Bramley had previously been transferred by Mexborough to Rotherham and then came back without a fee to Mexborough.

Joe Bedford was snapped up by Mansfield during the close season and later went to Aston Villa, and Tommy Baxter, bought by Mexborough from Worksop for £25 later played by wolves. Matt Moralee. The club trainer, was previously with Sheffield Wednesday and is still residing in Mexborough.

Clever Manager

Missing from the team photograph were the club secretary, Mr, Clement Bickerstaff, who was away on club business, and Rob Hill, who died recently.
Mr. Bickerstaff, who is retired and living in Mexborough, was, says Mr. Marsdin, a very clever handler of players. Rob Hill usually captained the team.
Mansfield Town, just before going into Division III of the Football League, were runners-up to Mexborough in this championship season, but Mexborough defeated them at Mexborough 5-1 and at Mansfield 3-2. Mexborough also took four points from Scunthorpe United, now Division II members.
