To Broadcast

A young Mexborough Grammar School boy is making his mark in the world of elocution and this week has accepted an offer from the B.B.C. to take Part In a children’s feature programme. He is John Ward (13), youngest son of Mr and Mrs W A Ward, of 23 Addison Rd, Mexborough

John who is a keen Scout, has entered the Mexborough Music Festival for the last three years. In 1946 he was first in his class for elocution, in 1947 he repeated his success and last year won the Nancy Hall open challenge trophy for verse speaking.

In December the B.B.C. invited John to go to Manchester for an audition with a view to him taking part in Children’s Hour. He was told he was at that time not quite up to broadcasting standard. He was invited to attend special coaching classes in Manchester during the Christmas holidays. John attended the last of his six classes on Tuesday.

He has since agreed to take part in children’s hour.
