Messrs. Nicholson’s Important Sale
There was large attendance at the Sheffield Estate Auction Mart. High Street, yesterday, when Mesars. Nicholson, Greaves, Barber, and Hastings conducted one of the most important property sales held in Sheffield for some time.
In all there were thirty-six lots, embracing houses and land at Braithwell, Harworth, Conisborough. Skellow, Tickhill, Thrybergh, Kilnhurst, Rosehill, Rawmarsh. Mexborough, Wath, West Melton, and Thurnscoe.
The total bids amounted to £14,209, the highest price being paid for two lots of seven freehold houses known as Whitworth’s Buildings, Thurnscoe, while two similar adjoining lots of seven houses each fetched £915.
The sale marked an innovation, at least so far Sheffield is concerned. It was thought the conductors of the sale that the term ‘‘upset price” was not generally understood, and consequently all the lots were labelled “starting price —.” with an appropriate amount attached. Bidding was exceedingly brisk, in one or two oases almost exceeding double the starting price. The most remarkable rise from this point view concerned the house and outbuildings formerly known as the “Carpenters’ Arms,” Harworth. bidding for which began at £200. and finished at £490. Only five lots had to lie withdrawn.
The sale was held by order of Messrs. Whitworth. Son, and Nephew. Limited, who were represented by Mr. J. Hewritt. solicitor. Barnsley. The details of the sale were as follow:

Wath; and two six and four adjoining and similar houses.
