The Brass Bell

The Brass Bell

In a dark corner of the Markets Department of Mexborough Urban Council offices is a large, dust coated brass bell, and the Markets Inspector (Mr. W. H. Lee) is looking forward to the day when it can be used again.

For 40 years the closing of the market was signalled by its raucous peal, but since the order preventing the ringing of bells came into force nearly two years ago it has been silent, but is kept handy for the day when all the bells in the town can be freely rung.

Perhaps, however, with peace will come a yet more modern note, and an electric bell may be used. Perhaps the Council may even go another step further and use one of the sirens, at present allotted sterner tasks!
