The Bennetts.
A Football Family.

Walter Bennett was the third of four brothers, and, of course, was the “star” of the family. But his brothers were not undistinguished, as everybody who has had a passing acquaintance with football in the district for the past ten years well knows.

The eldest of the family was Willlam or “Micky” Bennett, who after being broken-in at Mexborough’, did splendid work far Wednesday twenty years ago when “Cocky’s”‘ football was still limited to the Leach and. to back lanes and other places where they are not particular about up to date equipment. “Micky” played centre-forward of Wednesday, and was one of the first, if not the first, footballer in. the district to rise to prominence.

Equally as good, in his way, was Harry E. Bennett, better known as ” Tip,” whose career was out short about four years ago by pneumonia. He was one of the men who brought Walter Bennett out, and. he was captain of the Mextboro’ team when Walter Bennett, as a youngster of 17, joined it. Subsequently he went to Barnsley, where he achieved pain as a worrying right-half, hard as nails, strong as a bull, and tough as leather. He was eventually captain of the Barnsley team.

The other brother, George, has distinguished himself locally, having played for Sheffield United and Barnsley, until he had the misfortune to be badly lamed on the field.

Most of the Bennetts have done good service for the Mexborough Cricket Club.
