28 April 1919

Sheffield Independent – Monday 28 April 1919

Victory In Final.

Swinton Bridge 5, Mexbro’ C. 2.

The final for the Montagu Schoolboys Shield, newly presented for competition in the Mexbro’ district Capt. F. J. O. Montagu, was played the Mexbro’ ground on Saturday, and resulted in a win for Swinton Bridge by 5 —2.

Considerable interest was taken the match, and there was quite a good number of spectators. The strong wind proved a decisive element, and the first half Swinton were kept strictly on the defensive. Mexbro’ twice found the net through Mace and Batty.

After the change over the state of affairs was completely reversed, and Swinton, attacking vigorously, found all the weak points in the Mexbro’ defence, the latter’s goal being subjected to an incessant bombardment.

Swinton got through upon six occasions, though one goal was disallowed for off-side. The second half saw make only two attempts to effect breaks through, and these failed to mature. The winning side were nippy lot and well deserved their victory, though perhaps not great a margin of goals. Their scorers were Shepherd (2), Davies, Johnson and Thompson.
