The Council “Derby” between Mexborough and Swinton, first of the Feast matches, on Saturday, was full of surprises.

The first came when H Parkin, one of Swinton’s opening batsmen, stepped forward to drive a dropping ball from Mexborough second-team bowler B Williams and had his stumps spreadeagled after knocking 17. The second was that Wilf Broadhead sent three hard returns to bowler Jim Richards, who dropped two but make sure of the third, when Broadhead and also made 17.

The spectators were then entertained by a lively display by Wath Grammar School boy B. Bailey, who made 34 before R Hydes bowled him. Batting cautiously Bernard Senior knocked the highest individual total of 36 not out, and E Cadman mates 20 before Swinton declared at 170 for eight. R Hydes (three for 56) and J Richards (three for 60) were the pick of the Mexborough bowlers.

Mexborough’s reply on 101 included an undefeated 43 by F Newton and 25 by Jim Richards. Swinton bowler E Cadman took seven for 29, twice taking two wickets in one over.
