Swallow Bottom’s Best

30 August 1929

Mexborough and Swinton Times, August 30, 1929

A notable catch was made by Mr. George Pagley, of 23, Raikes Street, Mexborough, on Tuesday evening at Swallow Bottom, near the Old Mill, Mexborough.

He caught a 12lb. pike, 37 inches in length. He hooked the fish about 9 p.m. and had a three quarter of an hour struggle to land it.

He was using frog bait—none too easy to find in this dry, weather—and Millward tackle.

Mr. Pagley was the, first to discover the presence of pike in the pond five years ago, when he captured a 15oz. one. Up to the present time he has caught 18 pike in Swallow Bottom this year. He says there are other large fish there.
