Sunflowers – 12 feet tall !

October 1938

Mexborough and Swinton Times October 14 1938

Ex-Sergeant A. D. Duck, formerly of Mexborough, and now licensee of the Star Inn, Barnby Dun, near Doncaster, sends us the above photograph of some outsize sunflowers which he has cultivated in the grounds of his hotel.

Ex-Sergeant Duck writes: “A few weeks ago you printed a picture of a tall hollyhock. Just to show you we grow sunflowers quite as tall at Barnby Dun I am sending you the enclosed photograph. The largest flower is 12 feet 3 inches, and all have been grown from seeds from the food I ‘get for my parrot.”
