Private R. Wood
(York & Lancs)

Mrs Jackson 30 Lower Dolcliffe Rd, Mexborough, has received news that her son, Private Robert Wood (York and Lancs) have been killed in action.

The following letter was written by the battalion chaplain:

“it is my sad duty to inform you that your son, Private R Wood, was killed on the night of the seventh. He was with a working party which was heavily shelled by the enemy, and we lost an officer and seven men killed, and several others wounded. He was killed instantaneously and suffered little or no pain.

I buried him this morning. Several of his comrades were present at his funeral, and the regiment is to erect a cross on his grave.

I beg to assure you of the sincerest sympathy of the officers and men was battalion; he died a hero’s death.”

Private Wood was 21 years of age, and worked at Cadeby Main before enlistment a year ago. He went to France last June.
