Signaller Scholes, Highfield Road, Doncaster, formerly of Wellington St, Mexborough, died in hospital abroad on April 21 of pneumonia, following extensive shell gas poisoning and is very near Rouen.
He was 30 years of age, and before enlistment was chief clerk to Mr. Dennis Wood, chartered accountant, of Mexboro’. He went to France last January having previously passed brilliantly in signalling teats, gaining 990 mark out of a possible 1000.
He had a special gift for his work, and a very valuable soldier, as well as an amiable and Christian man, is lost in him. He lived in Mexboro’ a number of years, returning to Doncaster about two years ago.
While residing here he was actively associated with the Mexborough Parish Church, where lie held office as a sidesman and also as secretary of the three gift scheme, which was very successful in his hands. He was a native of Doncaster, an old scholar of St. James’s, and for some years a Sunday school teacher at the Doncaster Parish Church. He was also for a time employed in the G.N. offices at Doncaster.
His widow, who was also an active Church worker in Mexboro’, is assured of the sympathy of the many people who understood and appreciated her husband’s many excellent qualities.
Signaller Scholes’s parents live at 50, Frederick street, Mexboro’. They have another son, Sergeant W. Scholes, serving, in Palestine. Sig. “Scholes, in one of his last letters, to his wife, mentioned that he had been recommended for the Military Medal.
