Soldier – Durose, Fred – Officially Reported Killed

Corporal Fred Durose, fifth York and Lancaster Regiment, grandson of Mrs and Antcliffe, 82, Church St, Mexborough, was reported missing April 12, 1918, has now been officially reported killed on that date.

Corporal  Durose was in Canada when war broke out he came over to England immediately, and enlisted in 1915 he was 21 years of age and single. Private J Johnson, who saw Corporal Durose hit says:

” We were in Steenwerck in the retirement. I saw him fall, hit by a machine-gun bullet in the head: he showed no sign of life. He had been wounded twice previously.

Private P Turner, 47 Norah Street, Goldthorpe, also reports having seen killed.

Mrs Antcliffe has received several letters from soldier friends of the deceased in France. Mrs Antcliffe has had two grandsons killed, and three others fought.
