Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 07 February 1902
Sad Case from Mexboro’
Smith summoned her husband. Christopher Smith, a miner, of Mexborough, for persistent cruelty, and also applied for a separation order
Complainant gave her evidence in a disjointed manner, and brought no witnesses.
The Bench stated that they could not grant her a separation order until they had further evidence.
The defendant stated that he had never ill-used his wife; she had gone away sometimes for two days, and he had had to look after the house. She had been in Wadsley Asylum sometime ago and, , in his opinion, it would be better for her there.
Complainant’s sister stated that, in her opinion, complainant would be better in the asylum if she would go. She had never seen defendant ill-use her sister.
The Bench advised her to look after her sister, and try and get her to the asylum if possible.
