Long Service

After being Father of the Typographical Association Chapel and in this office for 38 years, Mr J T Rowan, 38 Princess Road, Mexborough has decided to give up the post in favour of a younger man.

During Mr Rowan’s presidency, the members of the Chapel have always worked in harmony with the directors of the firm, and it has been a happy period for all concerned.

Mr Samson Uren has been appointed to succeed Mr Rowan in this capacity, and Mr H Hullett  is the new vice president. Mr Rowan will continue to act in an advisory capacity.

Until his voluntary retirement in 1921, Mr Rowan was a prominent figure in local politics. He has twice been Chairman of the Urban District Council. He was a keen member of the Trade Council and since that council split up into divisional parties has been secretary of the Don Valley divisional Labour Party.

Mr Rowan was chairman of the Mexborough housing committee and of the first baths committee which decided on and paid for plans for a public baths Mexborough.
