Pony Drivers Summoned
Percy Streets and J. Hault, the former of Denaby and the latter of Mexboro’, two pony drivers, working in the Denaby Pit, were charged with doing an act likely to endanger the safety of the mine.
On the 20th Feb. they got a boy down on the floor, and tried to walk a horse over him. The horse fortunately did not stampede, and did not hurt the boy. To do anything of that kind was a very dangerous act. The pony in question was a very spirited animal.
John Vaughan, a pony driver, said he was on 715 level, when Streets got hold of him and knocked him down. Streets and Hault then walked a pony over him. The pony did not want to walk over him, and witness had a narrow escape.
Mr. H. Watson Smith said the occurrence was reported to him, and he saw Streets and charged him with the offence, which he admitted in front of Vaughan.
Streets was fined 7s. 6d. and costs, and Hault, who had been before the magistrates several times, was fined £1 and costs, which he said he would not pay.
