Obituary of Samuel Arthur Cramp

The funeral took place on Wednesday at the Mexborough Cemetery, the Rev C Woodhouse officiating, Mr Samuel Authur Cramp, who died on Saturday at his home, 33, Church Street, Mexborough. He was 61 years of age.

Mr Cramp, who was the son of Mr and Mrs James Cramp, of Derek at Main, came to Mexborough about 40 years ago.

He had been employed in the flower trade always life when he came to Mexborough he took up an appointment as traveller with Messrs James White, Millers.

When this firm was bought out by the Barnsley Cooperative Society about 25 years ago, he started a business of his own account, and ever since she has been the district agent for three famous firms of Millers; Messrs Thomas Handley and son Ltd, of Doncaster, Hudson, Ward and Co Ltd of Goole and Joseph Rank Ltd of Hull.

At the time of his retirement about a year ago, it was the oldest Millers agent in the district. He did not do any milling himself, but he ran a board of the canal and a lorry for the conveyance of corn. His barge was the first in the district to have a paraffin engine fitted.

On his retirement is only son, Mr Cedric Cramp, took over the business.

Although he never took an active part in public life, Mr Cramp was very well known and well respected in the district. Although quite a reserved nature, the greatest interest was in his business. Mr Cramp leaves a widow, a married son and two daughters, Mrs Butler and Miss Edna Cramp
