Obituary.
Mr. J. Allsopp
Well-Known Mexborough Tradesman
Social and Religious Worker
Mr. Jonathan Allsopp, a senior official of the Free Christian Church and an active worker for a number of independent organisations in the town, died at his home, 57, High Street, Mexborough, on Friday, at the age of 59 after an illness lasting many months.
A native of Barnsley, Mr. Allsopp had been in the tailoring and outfitting business all his life, coming to Mexborough in 1900, and latterly conducting a business in High Street. His connection with the Free Christian Church at Mexborough dated back to the Church’s foundation 26 years ago. Mr. Allsopp was secretary for many years and was chairman of the Church Committee at the time of his death. He was the only person apart from the minister to conduct marriages, was secretary of the Church Trustees and one of the four local trustees.
Mr. Allsopp was a foundation member of the Mexborough Chamber of Trade, being its first president and, until his retirement on the grounds of ill-health two years ago, had been secretary for a number of years. He had since maintained an active interest in the work of the Chamber as a member of the committee. Mr. Allsopp was also a member of the committee of the Industrial Development Council, and was one of the founders of the Mexborough and District Mutual (Plate) Glass Insurance Society. He took over the secretaryship of the Society eight years ago in succession to Mr. R. Brown, and was re-elected secretary just over a week ago at the Society’s annual meeting. Mr. Allsopp had done much good work for the Montagu Hospital in various directions, the chief perhaps being the organisation over a number of years of the fortnightly whist drives promoted by the Ladies’ Committee.
Mr. Allsopp is survived by a widow and three daughters.
