Obituary
Mr. G. C. Bennett
Former Mexborough Builder

The death occurred on Monday of Mr. George Cutts Bennett, of 20 Argyle St., Mexborough. Mr. Bennett, who was 82 years of age, had a seizure some five weeks ago from which he never rallied.

A well-known figure in Mexborough, Mr. Bennett had not taken an active part in business for several years, but had been previously associated with the late Mr. Herbert Bendelow in the building firm of Messrs. Bendelow and Bennett.

Over a period of some thirty years this firm was responsible for the erection of a considerable amount of house and other property in Mexborough and district, and also worked in conjunction with the late Mr. G. H. Smith, in executing some of the large public building contracts secured by him.

Mr. Bennett was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bennett, and was a native of Scarborough, though his parents also had associations with Mexborough. Mr. Bennett, senior, owned a considerable amount of property in High Street, and he was a prominent public figure. He headed the poll every time he put up for the Mexborough Urban Council, and was at one time chairman of that body.

Mr. C. C. Bennett was very interested in sport and was a familiar figure at cricket and football matches at Mexborough. He was also a member of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club, and often went to watch the county team on their visits to Bramall Lane.

Mr. Benett leaves a widow and one son and three daughters who are married. Had he survived another month he and Mrs. Bennett, who is 80 would have celebrated, their Diamond Wedding anniversary.

Prior to taking up residence in Mexborough about 45 years ago, they lived for a period in Springfield, Massachusetts, U.S.A.
