Death in Scotland
Mr. Nicol Balfour Laidlaw, former manager of the National Provincial Bank at Mexborough, died yesterday, at his home Tweed House, Melrose, near Edinburgh.
Mr. Laidlaw came to Mexborough from Sheffield in 1909, and succeeded the late Mr. J. E. H. Drabble. During his seventeen years in the town he held numerous appointments, and at the time of his retirement in May, 1926, after 44 years in barking, he was treasurer of the Mexborough Montagu Hospital, of which he was also a life governor.
He took up with great enthusiasm the foundation, of a musical competition festival for Mexborough in 1912, and helped to maintain the movement on a sound financial basis. He was chairman of the executive committee, as well as chairman from its inauguration.
He was also interested in the Miners’ Welfare Scheme, and was a member of the committee originally formed to administer the fund in, Mexborough. He became a vice-president and treasurer of the Mexborough athletic Club.
Mr Laidlaw was succeeded as manager at Mexborough by Mr W Carrington Smith of Cardiff
