Mexboro’ Meet A Star Team at Nottingham.

 Notts. County 6, Mexboro’ 0

Mexboro’: Bromage; Burkinshaw, Davis; Hill, Kennedy, Saxton; Bramley, Green, Briggs, Shaw, Smith.

Notts: Street; Mill, Goucher; Stoke, Beasdale, Chamberlain; Nicholas, Kelly, Taylor, Widdowson, Bramley.

Referee: E. W. Bone, Lincoln.

Playing their second match on consecutive days at Nottingham yesterday Mexboro’ had no better luck than on the previous day at York. They were hardly likely to, for the Notts. team included no fewer than six players who have played in Second Division football, and S. W. H. Nicholas, the former Corinthian and international player at outside-right. He got few chances but against such a combination, and playing under it difficult conditions with rain falling all the time, Mexboro’ never had a chance.

It was not till the second half, however, that the defence gave signs of cracking up. Bromage and the backs had a gruelling time and the goalkeeper saved many shots in fine style: one full length dive to a fierce shot by Taylor early in the game was especially a notable. Under the conditions there was some excuse when Bromage failed to hold a shot by WIDDOWSON in the first few minutes. :

Mexborough did a fair share of the attacking in the first half and once Cyril Bramley had hard luck when he landed a ball on top of the crossbar; later Briggs shot straight at Street. At half time Mexboro’ were two goals behind. KELLY got the other goal.

The second half was filled with continuous attacking of the Mexboro’ goal and so persistent was the pressure that it was remarkable that the score did not reach double figure. It stopped at six, though Notts. got the bell in the net seven times. One effort was disallowed as Taylor was offside. That player revelled in the mud end got three of the second half goals. TAYLOR scored the third, fifth and sixth. WIDDOWSON got the fourth with a penalty kick awarded when a Mexborough defender handled.
