“No! No! Nanette”

Enjoyed by Mexborough Audiences the South Yorkshire Musical Comedy Society’s production of “No! No! Nanette”at Mexborough Empire this week was even more successful than the polished production of the show given this at Denaby several weeks ago. This must be attributed to the better and larger stage the fact that this Society has already produced the show six times, and were thoroughly at home in their parts.

With every additional presentation of the show the cast gain confidence, and this week they combined to give a first-class show. Mr Jack Snelgrove’s production values as well as his deft direction contribute largely towards the shows success, as does the charming portrayal of Nanette by Vera Brewster.

Mr J.J. Washington, the Society’s president, and Mrs Woffinden, were the guiding geniuses backstage, the former by providing the Society with a chance to play for three days in one of the cinemas, and Mrs Woffinden by painting the special sets of scenery which made a tremendous difference to the spectacular value of the production. This was in addition to her other contributions to the success of the production. The setting and background were all that could be desired.

Miss Brewster was fortunate in having behind the support of excellent principles and a good chorus, and she received sterling support from William Burton and Milton Fowler as Bill Earley and Jimmy Smith, from Molly Star and Ethel Atkinson as Sue and Lucille, and from Arthur Houlton, Rosa Lee, Mabel Sayles, Rennie Ellis and Winifred Clay, all doing admirably in other prominent roles.

The chorus’s, particularly dancing girls whose costumes were designed and dances devised by Mrs Wolfenden, stepped out in professional style and length colour and sparkle to the performances.
