New Headmaster
Mr. L. Smith for Mexborough Roman Terrace

Mr. Leslie Smith, music and science master at Adwick Road Modern School, Mexborough, has been appointed headmaster of Mexborough Roman Terrace Junior Mixed School in succession to Mr. E. C. Wilkinson, who has left to take over a new school in Goole.
Mr. Smith, who lives at 2, Princess Road, Mexborough, attended Dolcliffe Road and Adwick Road schools before going on to the Mexborough Grammar School. He completed his training at Leeds College.
In 1939, when he was called into the Army, he first served in the K.O.Y.L.I. in Norway with the signals section. When the Germans took over he was evacuated and after a short time in England went to Iceland. Mr. Smith spent two years looking after lines of communication there before returning to England where he transferred to the Royal Corps of Signals on receiving a commission as cipher officer.
Six months after being commissioned he became a Lieutenant and went to France two days after the D. Day landings. He served with Allied Forces in Europe until 1946.
Mr. Smith joined the staff of Darfield Foulstone Modern School and in 1948 he transferred to Adwick Road.
A keen musician, Mr. Smith has been secretary and deputy Bandmaster of Mexborough Military Band for the past three years, and is also a member of the Technical School Evening Institute Orchestra, in which he plays violin.
He is married and has one son.
He is son of Mr. C. Smith, a former School attendance officer at Mexborough.
