Military Medallist

Bombardier Jack Williams (25), only son of Mrs, and the late Mr. W, Williams, has been awarded the Military Medal.

Announcement of the award appeared in the “London Gazette” dated January 24th, and is presumably for gallantry during front line service with the Royal Artillery from D-Day onwards through France and Holland.

A casual reference in a letter this week from Germany, where he is serving with the occupation Forces, was the first intimation the family received of the award.

Mr, Williams was in the office of an insurance company in Mexborough before joining up in July 1940. An old boy of Adwick Road School, he was outstanding as a district schoolboy footballer and later became full back for Denaby United’s Midland League side, whom he assists when on leave, He was making his name in local tennis circles and in the last season before he joined up he won Mexborough Athletic club’s singles and doubles championship.

He was an active member of Mexborough Operatic Society and a member of several orchestras as a trumpet player.

Bdr Williams is a relative of Mr Tom Williams, Minister for Agriculture and M.P. for Don Valley.
