Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Thursday 12 October 1931

Mexborough Athletic  3  York City Reserves  2

A goal headed by Bungay three minutes from time enabled Mexborough, at home, before 1,500 spectators; to beat York City Reserves by 3 – 2 and thus complete the “double.”

McCabe gave York the lead, but Fleetwood and Davies put Mexborough in front before the interval. Fleetwood retired before half-time with a wrenched leg muscle, but Mexborough played up strongly despite the handicap. York equalised through Archibald.

York were better as a team, but Mexborough were the more determined. Danford, Annables, and Fleetwood were Mexborough’s best. Archibald was prominent for York.

Denaby United 2  Wombwell  2

Playing throughout the second half with ten men, Wombwell rubbed off a first half deficit against Denaby United and drew 2 – 2. They were unlucky not to win, for in the last ten minutes the Denaby goal was almost constantly under siege:

Wombwell played greatly improved football, their outstanding men were Hopkinson, Aukland and Briggs

The injured player was Murden (E.), who had four teeth knocked out and had to have stitches inserted in his face.

The scorers were Murden (L.) and Brayshaw, for Wombwell, and Pearson and Gilchrist for Denaby.

The visitors had powerful defenders in Taylor and North. The game was one of the hardest seen on the Wombwell ground.
