A Brilliant Performance by Grimsby Town.

Home Clubs’ Gay Time.

The ten matches in the Midland League on Saturday went strongly in favour of the home clubs, all of them winning except Loughborough Corinthians, who went down to Grimsby Town Reserves by five goals to one. This was a brilliant performance on the part of the Lincolnshire side, for Loughborough had obtained every possible point but five at home, and, in addition, had only once previously forfeited more than three goals in a match, that being when they were beaten 4-3 at Mexborough, on December 7th. Grimsby fully deserved their win. They were much the better side. Their forwards were fast on the ball and shot well, the wingers, Wright and Mannings, being specially prominent. Had Grimsby taken all their chances, they would have scored several more goals. The scorers were Wright (3), Glover, and Cooper, for Grimsby, and Woolhouse, for Loughborough.

In their first quarter of an hour at Grantham, Barnsley Reserves played like a team inspired, but they flattered to deceive, and were beaten 2—l. A fine goal by Harron put Barnsley ahead and spurred Grantham, and once Evans bad brought the scores level, the home team always looked a winning side. Watson got the winning point, and Barnsley’s goal had many close shaves.

Mansfield Town, with a weakened side, owing injuries, were compelled to play reserve intermediate line against Frickley Colliery, but were always a winning team after Gray had opened the scoring in four minutes. Before the interval Gibson and Murphy added points, Mansfield winning 3—0. For the winners. Stimpson, at left half back was excellent, and Murphy was the best forward.

Wonderful Goalkeeping.

Denaby United were quite overplayed at Newark, the score of 2—1 in no way representing Newark’s superiority. The Denaby crossbar was hit three times, and only brilliant “keeping” by Smith kept the score down. Smith was the saviour of his side repeatedly. Binns (late of Shirebrook) and Kcotley scored for Newark, and near the end a quick breakaway enabled Moralee to net for Denaby.

Scunthorpe United beat Nottingham Forest 5—3 in a good match at Scunthorpe, really excellent football being played. The United merited their win, but the Forest displayed clever ball control. Scunthorpe’s forwards were in irresistible form, and the two wingers, Simmons and Beynon, were brilliant. The scorers were Baldwin (two), Beynon (two), and Calladine, for Scunthorpe, and Heathcock, Howie, and Baynham (own goal), for Forest. Blah

Mexborough Athletic, by  virtue of a goal scored by Green in the closing minutes, just defeated Boston at Mexborough, before 1,000 spectators. There was little to choose between two moderate teams. Mexborough were the better in the earlier stages of each half, but Boston responded with spirit. For Mexborough, Fleetwood and Green were the better wing, Vollans and Davies good half-backs, and Davis and Ward the best of the defence. For Boston, Streets (goalkeeper), Levick (centre-half), and Halliday and Craven (forwards) were prominent.

Gainsborough Going Strongly.

By defeating Chesterfield 3 – 0 at Gainsborough, Trinity secured nine points out of their last five matches. They wore in sparkling form, and the visitors had a harassing time all through. Smith, Tilbrook, and Turnbull scored. The Chesterfield defenders worked hard, and kept the score down by skilful tactics.

Wombwell’s improved, form is resulting in a steady improvement in gates, and there was quite big crowd for the meeting with Rotherham United Reserves. The match was decided by a single goal, scored in the second half for Wombwell by a player named David George, on trial. Smailes, for Rotherham, and Raynor and Shepherd, for Wombwell, were the outstanding men.

After a thrilling struggle, Worksop Town defeated Hull City Reserves by three goals to two. It was the first home Saturday win for Worksop since November 9th. The Town were full value for their win, although Hull played delightful football, their attack being fast and clever. Hull were twice behind, but fought back. The scorers were: Pardon, Staniland, and Goddard, for Worksop; Marsh and Murray, for Hull.

Notts County Reserves beat Wath Athletic 3—1 at Meadow Lane, but it was no runaway affair, and at times the visitors were very troublesome. Maw, Merritt, and Hickinbottom scored for Notts, and Walsh for Wath
