Close Rivalry at the Head of Midland League.
Young Newcomer’s Impressive Performance in Denaby Goal-Scoring Burst
Bradford Reserves, Grimsbv Town Reserves, and Nottingham Forest Reserves maintained their-close rivalry the head of the Midland League, all three winning handsomely, but the best performance of the day was lowly Denaby’s seven goals against York City Reserves.
The magnitude of Denaby’s defeat of York, who throughout played really good football, sent a great wave of enthusiasm through the loyal supporters who have waited so long for victory.
In nine minutes Wraith scored, and then Adams converted penalty for hands. Hughes neutralised this within a minute, and the same player got York’s only other goal. Adams made his quota into four, and appeared to revel in the going, as did Siddall, outside right, who was directly responsible for four goals being scored from accurate centres. Moss and Wraith scored Denahy other goals.
The man of the match was Black, a newcomer. This youth astonished all by his constructive work and stamina. He was the best forward seen at Denaby this season.
Last Minute Winning Goal.
A battle of stamina saw Wombwell defeated by a goal scored in the last- minute against Hull City Reserves at Wombwell. In the first half, Hull were confined to their own nail except for about half-a-dozen breakaways, and Briggs gave Wombwell the lead just before the interval. The second half saw Wombwell a tired team, and the longer the game lasted the stronger Hull City became in contrast. Gill scored tbc equaliser, and almost with the last kick of the match registered the winning goal.
Mexborough Athletic lost two home points to Notts County Reserves, who were value for their 3 —1 win. Mexborough had a first-rate defence, and hard-working halves, but the forward line was poor, only Fitzgerald and Fleetwood showing to advantage. Ferguson was good in the Nottingham goal, and had a steady defence in front of him. Raven, right half, and Maw and inside forward, were outstanding. Coglin (2) and Richards scored for Notts County and Renton for Mexborough.
Scunthorpe United had a harder struggle to beat Rotherham United Reserves 3-0 at Scunthorpe Saturday than the score would suggest. For almost three parts of the game play was even, with neither side able to score. In the later stages, however, Reed, Smelt, and Dawson scored for Scunthorpe, who deserved the points because they were the more dangerous side in front of goal. Rotherham were well served their half-back line, but their forwards were poor in font of goal. Wilson (centre-half), Methven (centre-forward) and Dawson (inside-left) played well for Scunthorpe.
Chesterfield Reserves beat Newark Town 5 – 0 at Saltergate, the scorers being Jeavons (2), Orr, Egan and Binks. Newark promised well in midfield and were often in action, but they failed to finish. Chesterfield’s attack was very incisive, and there would doubtless have been oven more goals but for Unwin being injured and having to change places with Jeavons. The home halfbacks gave every support to the forwards, while both Machent and Kidd were sound in defence.
Barnsley Reserves overplayed Lincoln City Reserves at Oakwell, and won by 5 – 1. Ives and McConville defended stoutly in the first half, but Barnsley’s attack was always very assertive, and for most of the second half was in Lincoln’s quarters. Chivers accomplished the hat trick,” but missed several chances. Other Barnsley scorers were Kerry and Young, who, with Green, were very prominent. McConvillo scored Lincoln’s goal from a free kick. Gregory and Edwards were the best of Lincoln s forwards, who were generally well held Henderson, Shears, and Rodger.
Two Goals for Quantrill.
Mansfield Reserves were no match for the Forest second string on the City ground at Nottingham, and were beaten 4—0. Forest were the faster and cleverer side throughout, and it was solely due to the Mansfield defence that the score was not doubled. The Forest defence was exceptionally good, and Clarke and Quantrill were always prominent in the attack. The goal-scorers were Clarke (2) and Quantrill (2).
Bradford Reserves outclassed Frickley to win 6—2 at South Elmsall on Saturday. Neither team was at full strength, but, adapting themselves to the bad conditions, Bradford played fast and clever football, and were altogetner too quick for Frickley’s shaky defence, only the brilliance of the goalkeeper, Harvey, keeping the score down. Burton (2), Harwood. Divers, Leedham, and Morton scored for Bradford, and Moon (penalty) and Barber for Frickley.
Gainsborough Outplayed.
Gainsborough were completely outplayed at Boston Saturday, and were defeated 3—0. Earle and Mitcham were the scorers. Gainsborough could not settle down to the heavy conditions, their defence, being particularly weak. Robinson was occasionally danger- but Cooke in goal and tho two home backs were in excellent form. Davis, Boston’s principal goal-scorer, was given little chance.
