Mexborough Town F.C. 1906-7

Do you remember these lads of the Mexborough Town side that went through season 1906-7 with only one home defeat? They are:

(back row, left to right) Biggs, Atkin, Birch, Tayles, Longworth, Hardy, Long.

(Front): Lindley, McNeill, Rogers, Morallee (kneeling), Haywood, Lumb, Gosling (kneeling) and Hibbert (kneeling).

The accompanying photograph of Mexborough Town, season 1906-7, which has been kindly passed on to us by Mr. J. T. Rowan, of Mexborough, carries with it many interesting reminiscences.

Mexborough went through this season with only one defeat at Hampden Road, that by Sheffield United Reserves, who ultimately won the championship. It was a 4-3 verdict, and came five matches from the end of the programme.

Mexrough finished up fifth in the chart with a record of:

P             W            L              D             F            A            Pts
38           20           11           7              72           52           47

Denaby were on their heels. Grimsby Town Reserves. Sheffield Wednesday Reserves and Rotherham followed United at the head of the chart.

Incidentally, this was the year Sheffield Wednesday won the English Cup by beating Everton. Remember? Wednesday won two-one and there was, at the time, some difference of opinion as to whether the first Wednesday goal was scored by Stewart or Chapman. Scott had effected a smart save from the latter, and Stewart drove the ball home, and the confusion was caused by the belief that the referee ruled that the ball had been over the from Chapman’s shot. A statement by the referee, however shows that Stewart obtained the goal. Simpson got the other.
