Mexborough Win Their Filth Successive Match
By defeating Wakefield City, at Hampden Road, yesterday, Mexborough registered their fifth successive victory during the holidays. The game was by no means exhilarating, both sides snaking poor use of their opportunities. Ingham gave Mexborough the lead after about ten minutes’ play, and put them further ahead fifteen minutes later, with a hard, long drive, which took Bourne completely by surprise. Near the interval Barraclough, the City right back, conceded a penalty by tripping up Whittaker, and Cox gave the goalkeeper no chance with the shot.
There was no further scoring, though Mexborough had practically all the play in the second half. Walker filled the outside-left position for Mexborough, and was by far the most dangerous forward on the field. He executed some exceedingly clever movements, made most of the play for the rest of the Mexborough vanguard, and came very near to netting three times.
Wakefield again made a number of experiments, many of which proved successful. Robinson was the most aggressive of their forwards, and sent in a number of good shots in the first half.
Cope, in the Mexborough goal, had a fairly quiet time, though he once ,saved brilliantly from Robinson, stopping a terrific shot at, point blank range, and kicking the ball out for a corner, after having been floored by the shot
