Mexborough’s Merry Xmas.

Mexborough Town 2  Denaby United 1

The Christmas football interest, of the Don Valley centred mainly in the meeting of Mexborough Town and Denaby United, on the Town ground, where gathered a crowd large enough to make up a seasonable donation to the club funds.

Mexborough won 2 – 1, the narrowness of the margin once again demonstrating how little there is to choose between these close neighbours and rivals.

Connelly and Dyer scored for Mexborough and Westwood for Denaby.

On the actual run of the play Denaby certainly showed the better methods, and in the second half particularly did the greater amount of attacking; but it’s the goals that count, and in this respect Mexborough worthily gained what proved to be their second victory in succession, and in so doing strengthened the feeling locally that the old club is on the up grade.

This last match was—except as concerned one man, who used his weight too roughlv— played in a clean, healthy spirit, and on the first league test Denaby have good grounds for fancying their chances of turning the tables in the return, which will be fought at the colliery village on New Year’s Day.
