Yorkshire League

Mexboro’ Took All the Points

Mexborough Town continued their quest for the Yorkshire League title over the weekend by collecting the maximum four points from two matches and notching their eighth successive league victory.

Mexborough Town 1      Thackley  0

The saying is that “when you’re on a winning streak you get all the breaks. Certainly this is true of Mexborough Town after Sunday’s game. Coming up against a blanket defence, the Town battered themselves against the wall, only to leave themselves open to counter-attacks which almost proved fatal.

Thackley threw a sea of red shirts across the edge of the penalty box and cut out any high balls with ease as the defenders towered over Town’s forward line.

With this set up Thackley held out until half time, and only Roger Wood gave trouble as he broke through to test the ‘keeper on several occasions.

The goal, coming in the 55th minute, was a little lucky. Brian Parker did very well to head the ball as three defenders went up for a high centre, and as the ball bounced free he was on to it to push it home.

The effect of this was to force Thackley to come out and attack producing a fast, lively last quarter in which Town withstood a barrage of shots. Two golden opportunities went begging, and Town must have been relieved when the final whistle sounded.
