Mexborough to Lose Clergy all at Once

July 1937

Mexborough and Swinton Times, July 2, 1937

Mexborough, it seems, is to lose all Its Church of England clergy at once.

Readers have known for a few months that the Vicar of Mexborough (the Rev. E. B. A. Somerset) and the curate (the Rev. C. Woodhouse) are leaving shortly, but now the Priest-in-Charge of St. George’s (the Rev. C. B. Renshaw) announces his own forthcoming departure.

He is to take up work at Cantley, near Doncaster, on October 1st.

Writing of Mr. Renshaw’s work, the Vicar says: “He has been with us just a year, and in that time his influence over the children has been very marked, and he has won the respect and regard of everyone. But the curacy to which he is going offers him the prospect of a fuller exercise of all his powers in a rapidly growing parish, where he may hope to settle down for a number of years.”

Mr. Renshaw was educated at Canterbury Cathedral Choir School, Bedford House Preparatory School, Oxford, University College, Nottingham, and Queen’s College, Birmingham. He has previously held a curacy at Royton Parish Church, Oldham, and at Darlington, he was in charge of the St. Columbas’ Mission Church. A member of the choir at Canterbury Cathedral as a boy, he was organist and choirmaster at Huthwaite (Notts) Parish Church when only 18, and later he was organist at Queen’s College, Birmingham.

The Parish Church of Cantley is a beautiful 13th century Church. The present incumbent is the Rev. W. M. Tatham.
