Mexborough Market Thefts

John Finn, an 11 year old Denaby lad was bound over in the sum of 40/– on two charges of theft. In the first case he was charged with stealing a vest, valued 10d, from the stall of Helen Innocent, of 30 Broomhill Rd, Sheffield, in Mexborough market on Monday night.

Complainant said she did not miss the article until the constable brought it to her.

PC Ingleby, stationed at Mexborough, said he saw the defendant, hanging about the complainant stall at 7-15 p.m. he picked up something, and put it under his Jersey. He then to a urinal close by, and shortly afterwards came out again. Witness asked him what he had got, and he replied that he had got nothing. He then pulled a vest (produced) out of his trousers. When charged with the theft, he replied, “I picked it up off the floor.”

Defendant pleaded guilty.

In the second case he pleaded guilty to stealing a pocket handkerchief, value 3d, of the stall of an Attercliffe common Draper.

When PC Ingleby apprehended him with the stealing, he made no reply.
