Mexborough Club and Young Players

Reference to the improved fortunes of the Mexborough C.C. was made at the first annual dinner last night.

The event was held celebration of the team winning the South Yorkshire section of the Yorkshire Council.

Mr. C. E. Bayes, chairman, presided and said they were out to encourage young players and far more facilities would offered in future for practice. The second team was returning to the South Yorkshire League, and several of last year’s first team players had expressed a wish to play with the second team. That would give more opportunities for young players to make their mark.

He congratulated Eric Rawlin, their captain and fast bowler, upon winning the Yorkshire Council bowling averages for the second time within three years, a feat never previously achieved in the Council.

Commenting on the improved attendances, Mr. Bayes said that the gate receipts had almost paid expenses, which had not been the case previously.

Mr. H. May also congratulated the team on its success and its members upon their fine spirit of sportsmanship.
