Mexborough Athletic 4, Rotherham United Reserves 1

Mexborough were full value for their handsome win against a ragged Rotherham side which included four amateurs.  Miller, Rogers and Shepherd put Mexborough three ahead without reply before the interval, and in the second half Jack Birkinshaw scored a fourth, Whitehead replying for Rotherham.

It was an interesting game, especially in the first half, and on the day’s play Mexborough fully deserved to hand the wooden spoon over to their neighbours. Winstanley and Wilbourne were impressive backs for Mexborough and the halves worked well.  Rogers and Miller were good wingers, and Bolan, at centre-forward had his best match for a long time. Ralph Birkinshaw was happier in the first half, in contrast with his nephew Jack, who improved to play a splendid second half game. Rotherham suffered through scrappy and haphazard forward play.  The front line never showed much combination and the halves were too busy with the Mexborough forwards to give them much assistance, though Millington put up a game display at centre-half.

Wilson, at left back, was their best man, and showed clean kicking and good recovering all through. Turner, in goal, had some unhappy moments and was at fault with two of the goals. There were 1,200 spectators.
