A Game in a Gale.
The wind at Mexboro’ was blowing very strong, and the match with Conisboro’ was finished in a perfect gale. Mexboro’ won the toss, and put Conisboro’ in. They made a good start, 30 runs being put up for two wickets. Then Peirn found a good spot, and Conisboro’ were all out for 56. Feirn took six wickets for 26 runs, and Sydall three for 24. W. Robinson, Marlbro’, and Nesbitt all reached double figures, and gave quite a creditable display.
Mexboro’ did manage to win, and although the game was never really in doubt, a bit of luck Conisboro’ way might easily have turned the tables. The Mexboro’ tail-end went in first, and two wickets fell cheaply, but Peirn and Machin recovered the situation, and put on 30 runs. Then came a rot. Barnett was given out lbw., Mitchell and Sydall were bowled, and six wickets had gone for 40. Then in a perfect hurricane of wind, the bails having to be escaped down, Turner and Nicholson took the score to 55, and the game was won.
At Mexboro’. For the winners J. Feirn took six wickets for 23 runs, and H. Syddall three for 24.
