Mexborough 7  Worksop Town 0

Mexborough entered upon their fourth League future at Mexborough on Saturday, their antagonists being Worksop Town. About 1000 spectators lined the ropes.

Mexborough were successful in the spin of the coin and elected to play downhill. At about 3.45 the ball was a starter, and the Worksop quarters were soon entered but defence prevailed and the leather was got away after exchanges in midfield. Bennett on the left got possession and passed to Gough who sent in a splendid shot which the visitors’ goalkeeper saved in a marvellous manner, but was beaten a minute afterwards by the same player.

Nettled by this reverse Worksop began to press, but the Mexborough backs preserved their charge intact and play afterwards, remained in midfield. The home forwards again got possession and assailed the Worksop citadel, bit the visitors custodian saved shot after shot. Spicer showed some pretty play at half back, for which was deservedly applauded. Again going away Bennett and Gough played a splendid passing game on the left, and when close in the villages territory obtain a foul, but Hunt kicked out.

From the kick-off Mexborough again press and scored, Gough again doing the needful. The Worksop lines were again besieged, but the goalkeeper saved them from further disaster. Worksop made a smart raid on the Mexborough Citadel, and at one time looked like scoring, but Crossley saved in time.

The visitors secured a corner, which, however, proved fruitless. Hunt and Lovett took the ball away and matters looked lively close to Worksop territory. The half’ backs and backs defended well, saving many good shots. Mexborough maintained an aggressive attitude. Play became more exciting, and the visitors worked hard to prevent farther drawing.

At halftime the game stool—Mexborough 2 goals, Worksop 0.

On the resumption the home team rapidly shop the leather into the visitors goal. Walter Bennett, on the right, now negotiated a single-handed run off the length of the field passing the half backs and backs, and finally scored with a grand shot amidst tremendous cheering.

After a visitation to the Mexborough line, where light has returned, a raid was made on the Worksop quarters, but the ball was got away. Not to be denied the home forwards again. Were conceded a corner, which Walter Bennett placed, and Gough scored a goal number four.

The Worksop goalkeeper was busily engaged, but the borne forwards could not get past him, and the bell was transferred to the other end, but Crossley always proved one too many for them. Edwin Whitehorse by a huge kick cleared and passing the bell right and left reached the Worksop lines Gough again scored.

Further pressing followed at the same end, and the visitor’s goalkeeper had to save shot after shot in rapid succession. After breaking away the home forwards came up again and Hunt scored with a fast low shot. (6 – 0).

On the ball being restarted, Mexborough at once seized it and rushed up to the visitor’s citadel, but the goalkeeper saved. Worksop then broke away, but was so hampered that they could not shoot, and Mexborough got away again, and a scrimmage was witnessed in front of the goal, during which Spicer scored.

Nothing further occurred and a splendid game ended.
