Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Monday 18 December 1922

Mexborough  5  Gainsborough Trinity  0

Gainsborough Trinity cut a weak figure at Hampden Road. Mexborough ran round them, and won 5-0.

Brayshaw did the “hat trick” in the first half. Waterfield, a dangerous winger throughout the game. got the fourth goal a quarter of an hour after the restart, and Walker, who led the attack with energy. scored the fifth.

In the first half Waterfield put a penalty kick well over the bar.

York City  2 Wombwell  1

Visiting York City, Wombwell were well beaten by the odd goal in three. They found the Citizens in their most brilliant form, and were so far overshadowed that the score hardly indicated the run of the play.

York spent most of their time on the attack, their left wind. Harron and Lemmons, being almost irresistible. Harron and Albrecht scored the York goals. Johnson, in the Wombwell goal, played a splendid game and was largely responsible for the low score.

Hull City Reserve   2  Wath Athletic  1

Wath athletic were beaten 2 – 1 by the City Reserves at Hull. Fast football was the order of the first half, and Wath did well to keep even with their admittedly superior opponents.

Wood scored for Hull four minutes after the interval, and repeated the performance just before time. Fi mly having scored was only goal after an hour before.

Wath showed good combination on occasion, but finished weakly.
