Mexborough 4 Newark 1 (Midland League.)

Mexborough Athletic made its first home appearance to-day before about 3,500 spectators.

Newark had lost both their two previous matches and, in view of Mexborough’s form in the opening game, the home team looked forward to starting off with good win.

Teama:—

Mexborough: Bromage; Burkinshaw and Kennedy; Sylvester, Beaumont and Saxton; Ashton, Davis, Taylor. Shaw and Veilens.

Newark.—Jennings; Dallinson and Hardy; Lumley, Challoner and Kenwick; Dovey, Allen, Hart, Spray and Topley.

The opening of the game was sensational. Mexborough made progress on the left. Vollans put the ball across to Taylor after beating Lam ley. The centre-forward took the ball in his stride, put it well away. This came when the game was barely one minute old.

Following a corner, Beaumont shot hard over Newark’s bar.

Newark’s goal was subject to considerable pressure. Dallinson had to receive attention after heading awav a fierce drive from Shaw. Bromage was rarefy troubled in goal. Dovey got round Saxton and sent in good shot which hit the home upright.

Following Mexborough pressure, Taylor added a second goal, and just before half time Shaw put the ball into the Newark net for the third time, but the point was disallowed for offside.

The second half was still in the attacking role and further goals were not long in coming. Davis added a third and Taylor ran through to score Mexborough’s fourth and his own third.

A breakaway by Newark left Spray with an opening to score a surprise goal for the visitors
