Mexboro’ Should Have Had a Net Full by Switch Round

Mexborough 3, Hatfield Main 0

The Stanley Matthews era came to Hampden Road on Monday when Hatfield’s 49 year old team manager, Arthur Jones turned out for the team in a Yorkshire League encounter. And this gives one a fair idea of how seriously this result can be taken.

Hatfield, without three of their regular first teamers, were never in it. They certainly tried hard and gave me the impression that, had they have been at full strength they would have given Mexborough a match.

Same Old Story

Mexborough could have taken the lead in the first minutes when Brian Parker’s lob sailed over the bar. With Terry Glossop back on form it seemed only a matter of minutes before Mexborough would be in the lead, but in fact they had to wait thirty. It was the same old story of missed chances, a little more aggression and they would have had a net full before the interval.

Mexborough did take the lead when Terry Glossop met a loose ball near the Hatfield penalty area, swerved past two men and sent a superbly judged lob into the roof of the net.

With John and David Colley both playing well, Town were well on top and Hatfield had to than Jackie Jones for some fine ‘keeping.

The home side went further into the lead shortly before halftime, and again it was Terry Glossop who did the spade work. The lithe player manager made a daring run down the left and was simply hacked down by Hatfield full-back, David Jones. Mal Whitehouse had no trouble scoring with the subsequent penalty.

Man of The Match

The best player on the field was former Denaby player Norman Allott he starred both in midfield and in attack and Mexborough must have wondered just what they could do with him in their side. Almost every time he had the ball, Mexborough were in trouble and come the final whistle It was amazing that he hadn’t scored.

As It was the only other scorer was Mexborough’s star find. Bob Davidson. He was on hand to convert some more fine running by Glossop with a close range shot. This was deserved reward for another fine performance by Davidson and he should play a big part in any bid for honours from Town next season.

What had otherwise been a cleanly fought game was spoilt when referee Markell sent Hatfield’s  Terry Aden off, supposedly for something that he said.
