Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Monday 22 December 1919

Mexboro’s Big Win.

The Mexborough team distinguished itself again on Saturday nine pulling off the honours against Grimsby Town Reserve one the finest games ever witnessed in the Don alley.

The outstanding feature of the game was the remarkable awakening of the home team in the second half. As has happened in several Midland League games this season, the team was active but not brilliant in the first half, though in the second every member of the team seemed to be charged with electricity, with the result that the visitors were positively swept off their feet.

Waite scored a couple of lovely goals and Burkinshaw netted in a brilliant manner.

Mexborough had several players hurt, while Glover had to be taken to hospital suffering from a broken collar bone.

Grimsby broke through the home defence once, but the goal was disallowed.
