Mexborough 3 Grimsby Town Res 2

October 1927

Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Monday 24 October 1927

In rain and on waterlogged ground Mexborough Athletic beat Grimsby Town Reserves 3—2. Shaw opened the scoring for Mexborough and before half-time Grimsby equalised through Croft and went in front through Twells.

In the second half Taylor converted a penalty and equalised for Mexborough.

Grimsby just afterwards lost the services of Swavey, their centre and their best player up to then. Despite this handicap they contested the issue stubbornly, but Kennedy, with a free-kick, gave Mexborough a victory which was deserved on the whole run the game.

Vernon, a Sheffield junior, gave a creditable display at right back.
