Mexborough Again Beat the Champions.

Mexborough, who were visited by Worksop on Saturday, repeated last season’s brilliant victory over the champions, though they scored only once, through Walker, and did well to hold their advantage when sorely pressed after the turn round, they deserved both points, and their superiority in the first half might easily have been represented by a wider margin. While they enjoyed the advantages of slope and breeze they dominated the play. Worksop should certainly have got through in the second half, for the forwards had chances, but they were met by a spirited defence that never hesitated to set afoot a counter-attack.

Both goalkeepers put in good work, and Roberts, Mexborough’s new back from Rotherham Town, was very sure. Spink, Worksop’s right winger, was always a man to be watched, and Stimpson and Amos were also dangerous for the Notts side, with a sound centre halfback in W. H. Froggatt behind them.

Gainsborough Trinity 1  Wath Athletic  0

The match between Wath and Gainsborough Trinity on the Northolme was one in which the honours went to the defenders. The first half was goalless.

In the second half Trinity had much the better of the play, and were twice rather unfortunate in not scoring previous to Coplev netting the only goal. Miller, late of Grimsby, played at right halfback for Gainsborough, and with a little more training should prove an acquisition.

Wath had Topham, their goalkeeper, to thank for the low score against them. He was very fine and was well supported by Dowson and Williams.

Splendid Game at Doncaster.

Doncaster Rovers and Denaby United put up a fine and exciting match on the Rovers’ new ground before quite 8,000 spectators, and a draw was a fitting result.

While the Rovers had the best scoring opportunities Denaby were as good in general play, allowing up as a fast and clever combination. However, their forwards shot badly, and with the one exception—when Bretnall scored first—were very wide of the mark. On the other hand, Ekins gave a brilliant exhibition in the United goal, but twice Boardman, though he equalised, was at fault when he had golden chances.

The Rovers were always the more dangerous when on the move, the forwards combining well, while the halves, Miller, Ashmore and McLean were strong both in defence and attack. Jacklin was fairly well covered and had not really much to do.

Denaby’s halves tackled with determination. Bretnall led the line well and Harris and Hamilton were daring raiders. Cowan played a great game at centre-half-back and the defence was always reliable.

Wombwell made a distinctly good impression at Millmoor on Saturday and in the earlier stages did a large past of the attacking, White (inside-right) opening the scoring. Although County put in a lot of hard work they were kept at bay by an energetic defence. Hardstaff, the County custodian, had to clear quite a number of shots, all the Wombwell forwards being very much alert. They were ably led by Charlesworth.

Early in the second half Barnes (outside -right) provided the equaliser. The County afterwards gave a much better display without being able to get the winning goal.
