Mexborough 1 Wombwell 0 – Wombwell’s Good Fight

Wombwell’s Good Fight.

Wombwell’s visit to Hampden Road provided Mexborough with a 1-0 win. Despite the miserable conditions, the play was interesting and clever. In the second half Mexborough s attack found the Womb well defence too good for them and Vollan’s goal, which came ten minutes before the end gave Mexborough a hard-fought victory.

The first half was fairly even. The home defence had plenty to do at times and Bromage and his backs were form against a good attack. The home halfbacks were again the strongest line, the forward line depended upon the efforts of the left wing for its success. Shaw and Vollans worked well together and the latter’s goal was a happy culmination to splendid display. The outstanding men on the Wombwell side were Murray and Smith the extreme wings.
