Frickley Give Mexborough a Rude Shock.

Mexborough Athletic, after drawing at Frickley 3—3, were rudely surprised in the replay at Mexborough yesterday, when Frickley thoroughly earned a convincing victory of 3—0.

The match was played in continuous rain and in generally miserable conditions, but there was great excitement amongst the 2,000 spectators. It was a hard struggle, but good football came only in spasms. Frickley started in strong style, and during their ascendancy Bromage did good work in the home goal. Later the game became even, but the Mexborough forwards lacked their usual incisiveness and found in Smelt, the Frickley captain and ex-Burnley player, a big barrier to progress. The only goal of the first half fell to Frickley, through Riley.

In the second half there was plenty of excitement and heaps of thrills, but the quality of the foot ball suffered through that high feeling which crept into the game. Kennedy and Beaumont were warned by the referee, and in the stern struggle for supremacy the Frickley defence remained sound. Frickley finished as they started, in forceful style. Within a space of two minutes nearing the end they got two further goals, one through Smart, who ran down the centre and placed the ball over Bromage’s head, and the final point through Swann, who took a centre from Smart, following a free kick well placed by Smelt.
