Mexboro’ and Wombwell Lose At Home

Mexboro’ had their biggest “gate” of the Season for the visit of DENABY on Saturday but disappointed their supporters who were looking forward to a victory after the display against Bradford a week earlier, by using by two clear goals.

BLACK got an early goal for the visitors and in the second half ALDERMAN headed through his own goal from a corner by Siddall, who, with Beggar, was outstanding for Denaby. Gale played a splendid game in a sound Denaby defence in which Mountney was also outstanding. Mexboro’s forwards never got close enough to be really dangerous. Glasper being the most effective, with Haigh and Perry the best halves. Armitage dealt brilliantly with from Bidden and Adams in the second half of a game in which Denaby always seemed more sure of themselves.

Though they gave an encouraging display and at one time looked like getting the points Wombwell were beaten 2-0 by CHESTERFIELD at Hough Lane. Alter a goalless first half in which Wombwell held their own and might have had some goals but for a fatal lack of finishing, a brief lapse after the interval proved their undoing, COOK and LEE getting goals for the visitors. Ward had no chance with the shots that beat him and gave a display of clever ‘keeping.

Reynolds and Brayshaw formed the most effective Wombwell wing, Ashmore sometimes failing to respond to the thoughtful prompting of his partner, Clegg. Dobson played remarkably well in the Wombwell defence, and Jones was free from blame for the defeat.
