Leaders’ All-Round Superiority at Mexborough.

Mexborough   0  Chesterfield Reserves  2

Mexborough Athletic, making their second appearance at home, last, night, before 1,500 spectators, wore defeated 2-0 by Chesterfield Reserves, the unbeaten Midland Learn leaders.

Mexborough showed up well in defence, in which good work was done by Capstick, Wheatley, and Liversidge, but the home backs, despite the efforts of Shepherd and Schofield, found the Chesterfield forwards too clever for them. As a partial consequence, the attack lacked cohesion, and, except for Hakes and Smith, the forwards were too disconnected and weak to trouble seriously the visitors’ defence.

Chesterfield were a much better all-round team, and their goals, by Bacon and McCormack did not reflect adequately their superiority.

They had good backs in Greig and Kidd.

Bacon (Chesterfield) was ordered off the field for an alleged foul on Liversidge.
