Mexboro’s New Start.

Management “Team” with Right Spirit,

The Supporters’ Club.

“We have every prospect of a good team on the field this season,” says a stalwart of the Mexboro’ club. “We have enough money guaranteed by several members on which to start the season, and if that money is not enough, we shall provide more. If funds get too low, we have promises from several members with cars that they will take the team on all away matches and so save travelling expenses.”

This is the spirit with which Mexboro’ are facing the coming season. It is up to the public of Mexboro’ and district now to support and keep Midland League football alive in the town. Nine men have guaranteed to see the club through the 1929-30 season, and if the public support means that the club finishes the season with a balance in hand, the guarantors will receive their money back; if not. then their finance disappears. They have nothing to gain but much to lose. Out of the expected balance at the end of the season, £100 will be kept for the signing of next season’s team and the remainder divided equally—one portion to go to the clearance of the debt on the football section of the Athletic Club and the other half towards football expenses.

The supporters club, of which great things are expected as already a membership of 130 or 140, 120 pay the full football membership subscription, that is 12s 6d. and 170, cards are also out. The foot committee desire the public to note that out of the Athletic Club full subscription fee of £1 1s only 5s. goes to the football section, while if they become solely members of the Football Club, the club’s finances benefit by 12s. 6d. to 5s. If persons desirous of becoming full football members cannot pay the full amount in one instalment, Mr. Irving Harris, the financial secretary, is willing to take the amount in 2s. 6d. instalments. The committee, therefore, offer every inducement to the public to give unstinted support.

Of last season’s players, five have already signed. They are Ward. who played exceedingly well in goal; Davis, the full back; H. Higginbottom, outside-left; and Marshall, right half. A strong addition to the half line is Clegg, who has been with Denaby United for several season, and who is strong in either left or right positions. At inside left to Higginbottom, is Davies, a Darfield lad who was with Rotherham last year. For the centre half position, Mexborough have secured Tubb, who was with Chesterfield last season. Bowman, the full-back cannot come to terms with the committee and refuses to sign. 12 other likely lads to begin trials in the next few weeks, to come from Wombwell, and both are hefty and with a football promise behind them.

The members gave this year will be in College Road, where also unemployed, on the showing of their cards, will be allowedentrance at the rate of 3d. per match. The Adwick Road gate will also be used.

To ensure as much public patronage as possible, the commitee with the committee of Denaby United, have arranged as many matches as possible not to clash with those of the other club. Mexboro’ fans are invited to support their own club, and when Mexboro’ is away, to support Denaby. Denaby people can easily do the opposite.

Guest as vice-presidents An old stalwart of years ago comes into an official Position As team manager and secretary – Mr Tommy Tomkins while Mr Irving Harris who has done exceedingly hard work for the club is financial secretary.
