A Go-Ahead Firm Catering For The Masses

    Supporting Local Industry

Business enterprise and progress extending over a period of thirteen years is recorded by the firm of David Haigh and Co., Mexboro’, the well-known South Yorkshire furnishers, jewellers and pawnbrokers. Catering for the working classes, the firm has grown with phenomenal success throughout South Yorkshire, and to-day branches are to be found at Rotherham, Maltby, Doncaster Stairfoot, Upton, South Elmsall, Royston. Denaby, Conisboro’. Woodlands, and Mexboro’.

At a time when trade was at its worst the firm erected a central warehouse in Main Street, Mexboro’, to stimulate local industry. The warehouse, which was completed in October, has now been opened, and an invitation to visit the building is extended to the public.

As wholesale and retail dealers the firm has grown from one branch to fifteen by giving good value at keen prices. Bedroom and dining room suites are a special feature and may be obtained from 4/19/6 to 25/15/-.  Everything may be obtained to equip the modern home. Sideboards, for which the firm has a great demand, may be purchased from 39/6 to £3/10/- and cabinets in all the latest designs, are offered at 12/9 and, 37/6 respectively.

For bedrooms, furniture can be provided to suit all tastes and classes, with suites at 9/15/- Beds may be had separately at £l/5/- Several rooms in the warehouse have been converted to represent a modern home.

A remarkable feature, which has been partly instrumental in the firm’s success, is the fact that in almost every way the goods are of local manufacture. It is the custom of the firm to support local industry and display with good effect every class of article, made in Rotherham, bedroom suites in Sheffield, utensils for washday at Kilnhurst.

The enormous output of South African, Australian and police boots is exceptionally high and a stock of £350 worth of boots sold at 10/- a pair is on show in the warehouse.

The warehouse itself is of modern design and fitted with a hoist for speedy and safe conveyance of goods. The building has been done by local contractors, and as far as possible local labour has been employed.  The warehouse is divided into sections to display with good effect every class of article.

An interesting section is that displaying glassware. Copenhagen ware is offered to those desiring the more expensive type, and articles of York and Knottingley manufacture for the more restricted purse.

The progressive attitude is due to the untiring enthusiasm and business acumen of the directors, Mr. David. Haigh, Mr. George Morley, Mr. John Clegg and Mr. Samuel Dean.

    The Builders

The contractors for the building were the well-known local firm of E. Taylor and Son of Adwick Road, Mexborough who have done considerable work in the town and district of high quality and efficiency. The warehouse is an excellent example of their painstaking methods, attention to detail and care for good finish.

    The Woodwork

Similarly with the joinery work which has been done by R. Bennett, Doncaster Road, Mexborough, whose craftsmanship will be noted in the appointments of the building wherever skilled woodwork has been called for.

    The Plumbing

The plumbing equipment of the warehouse has been done by another well-known local firm., E. Elliott and son of High Street and Schofield Street, who offer another example in fittings they have installed in Mexboro’ and district that Mexboro’ folk requiring skilled work done are liable to go “further and fare worse.”

    The Electrical Equipment

So, too, with the electrical installation by still another well-known Mexboro’ tradesman and craftsman, Kingsley Beeson, of Main Street, who also has done his work well and helped to make the warehouse the complete and up-to-date establishment it is.

    Up-To-Date Central Heating

The premises are thoroughly up to-date-in central heating. There is ample provision in radiators of the latest design, and piping, to give a comfortable temperature in every room. The boiler is of the cast-iron sectional type with all the most recent improvements. The work has been done by Allred Grindrod and Co., Charles Street, Sheffield, who are specialists in this class of work. Recently they have done the heating and hot-water supply services at the new employment exchange, Mexborough. They have installed a large number of heating systems for the Office of Works in post offices, employment exchanges, institutions, and garages. in Yorkshire, Lancashire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Cheshire, and other counties.
