Mexboro’ Mishap

Wath Motor-Cyclist Fined

An accident in High Street, Mexborough, on October 9th, had a sequel at Doncaster on Tuesday when Harry Brown, labourer, Wath, was summoned for driving a motor-cycle without due care and attention. He pleaded not guilty, but was fined £1.

Supt. Huddlestone said John Charles Scott, carrier, 83, Wath Road, Mexborough, had been delivering parcels to shops in High Street, and on getting to the Montagu Square end of the street gave a signal by whip and hand that he was about to turn. He also looked back and saw no traffic behind him. As he started to turn his horse and dray he heard and felt a crash at the rear of the dray and found that Brown had driven his motor-cycle into it.

Scott gave evidence, which was supported by Horace Darley Parker, postman, 7, Chapel Lane, Conisborough, and Theophilus Gething, accountant, 87, Main Street, Mexborough.

Brown said he was riding along High Street at about 15 miles an hour and when approaching the rear of the dray saw a trackless car coming in the opposite direction. He pulled up behind the dray, and when it began to turn the rear caught his handlebars and smashed his lamp. He complained that Scott did not bother about the damage, but went on to collect parcels.
